In the 14th century, the castle came under the control of the de Merode family, one of the most influential noble houses in Belgium. The de Merodes expanded and fortified the castle, transforming it into a grandiose residence that reflected their wealth and power.

Throughout its history, Florennes Castle has witnessed numerous historical events and transitions. During the turbulent periods of the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle faced sieges and occupations by various armies, including those of Spain and France. Despite these challenges, the castle remained a symbol of resilience and continuity for the region.

Gravensteen Castle, also known as the "Castle of the Counts," is a historic fortress located in the city of Ghent, Belgium. Its origins date back to the 9th century when a wooden structure was first built on the site to defend against Viking invasions. The current stone structure was constructed in 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace, designed to serve as a symbol of his power and to protect his territory from both external and internal threats.

The castle's architecture is a prime example of medieval fortification, featuring a moat, thick stone walls, and robust towers. Over the centuries, Gravensteen has served various functions, including a residence for the Counts of Flanders, a court, a prison, and even a mint.
